Learn the basics of WordPress including how to set up pages, categories, posts, installing a theme and working with basic settings.

Marks Breakdown

10% Classroom participation + Attendance
Attendance will be taken at the start of the class
(an allowance of 10 minutes late will be accepted and no later)

ASSIGNMENT:
Create a WordPress.com account

DUE immediately

WEEK 2: INTRO TO WORDPRESS

ASSIGNMENT:
Use your WordPress.com account that you created in WEEK 1

  1. Create Pages:
    Contact
    Bio
  2. Create Category:
    Blog
  3. Create 3 Posts and assign to the Blog category
  4. Create a menu, assign a position and include links to:
    Bio / Blog / Contact

DUE FRIDAY noon

WEEK 3: USING SITEMAPS

  1. Example of a sitemap
  2. Sitemaps defined
  3. Using your WordPress account – create a site using sitemap given in class

Sitemap Assignment

  1. Create a sitemap for a band website – select a real band / artist
  2. Must include:
    1. 4 Pages (Home + Contact + 2 others you decide on topics)
    2. 3 Categories (you decide on topics)
      1. 1 Category must have 2 SUB-CATEGORIES
        (example: Shows category with Upcoming Shows and Past Shows as sub-categories)
      2. Have 3 Posts per Category

TO create your site map use:  https://www.gloomaps.com

AVOID! 
Use of colors (adds more confusion and creates the need to have instructions)

Create a JPG or take a screenshot and upload using the form submission below.

WEEK 4: ADDING CONTENT

  1. Using WordPress to add text and images to pages and posts
  2. Adding content blocks
  3. Editing content blocks
  4. Basic text formatting
    1. Headings
    2. Paragraphs
    3. Lists
    4. Links
  5. Adding an Image
  6. Adding a feature image to a post

MAKE THE FOLLOWING FOR YOUR WORDPRESS SITE:
Home (page)
About (page)
Blog (category)
3 blog posts
Contact (page)

Add content to every page + post of your website

CONTENT – not blank pages or “coming soon”
(basically make it look like real content)

Include:
Headings
Paragraphs
Lists
Images
Links (external / email)

WEEK 5: ADDING A THEME and BASIC SETTINGS

  2. Adding a theme
  3. WordPress Basic Settings
  4. Theme Settings

ASSIGNMENT:

 

DUE NEXT THURSDAY 12pm noon

WEEK 6: TEST

ASSIGNMENT:

  1. Create a NEW WordPress account
  2. Using the sitemap provided build the basic site (pages, categories, sub-categories, posts) including the navigation menu
  3. Add content (text, images)
  4. Assign a theme – Twenty-twenty-three is recommended, work with and adjust the theme and WordPress settings
