Learn the basics of WordPress including how to set up pages, categories, posts, installing a theme and working with basic settings.

Marks Breakdown

10% Classroom participation + Attendance
Attendance will be taken at the start of the class
(an allowance of 10 minutes late will be accepted and no later)

ASSIGNMENT:
Create a WordPress.com account and submit link to the web site
DO NOT PAY FOR ANYTHING! It is FREE
(you may have to look for specific links)

WEEK 2: INTRO TO WORDPRESS

  1. WordPress Basics
  2. The difference between Pages and Posts
  3. Categories and Tags
  4. GUIDE to navigation menus – creating / editing
  5. Edit a Navigation Menu
  6. Editing Navigation Menu OLD + NEW (more advanced)

ASSIGNMENT:
Use your WordPress.com account that you created in WEEK 1

  1. Create Pages:
    Contact
    Bio
  2. Create Category:
    Blog
  3. Create 3 Posts and assign to the Blog category
  4. Create a navigation menu, assign a position and include links to:
    Bio / Blog / Contact

WEEK 3: USING SITEMAPS

  1. Example of a sitemap
  2. Sitemaps defined
  3. Using your WordPress account – create a site using sitemap given in class

Sitemap Assignment

  1. Create a sitemap for a band website – select a real band / artist
  2. Must include:
    1. 4 Pages
      Home
      Contact
      2 others you decide on topics
    2. 3 Categories (you decide on topics)
      1. 1 Category must have 2 SUB-CATEGORIES
        (example: Shows category with Upcoming Shows and Past Shows as sub-categories)
      2. Each MAIN Category must have 1 post
      3. EACH SUB-CATEGORY must have 3 posts

AVOID! 
Use of colors (adds more confusion and creates the need to have instructions)

Create a JPG or take a screenshot and upload using the form submission below.

USING THE PAGES / POSTS YOU MADE IN A PREVIOUS ASSIGNMENT – ADD CONTENT USING BLOCKS

Add content to every page + post of your website

CONTENT – is not blank pages and is not “coming soon”
